The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
