During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
